Dear Students and Parents,
I'd like to take a moment to introduce myself and give everyone an idea
about the first quarter topics in reading, language arts and social studies.
First a little bit about me. I started teaching in 1998 at Saipan's Tanapag Elementary School. I met and married my husband in 2000 at the Hyatt in Garapan. Together we have taught children on four different continents! I am very excited to be back in Siapan and have the opportunity to teach 4th/5th grade at Whispering Palms!
This quarter's topics in reading and language arts will follow the general idea of "Addressing Challenges and Choosing Your Responses". We will focus on geography skills in social studies. In math we will start with a review of basic skills from last year as well as developing strategies for word problems. Please let me know if you have an further questions or concerns. I will be posting a more comprehensive "map" of our journey after the first week of school.
Thank you,
Kim

What to expect:
1. Lots of celebrations and challenges as we all get to know one another. I look forward to meeting everyone as we and becoming part of the Whispering Palms' Family. 2. Mistakes: mistakes are how we grow, including me, so if I make one let me know right away. 3. Academic challenge: I will always try to challenge your child to grow from their level of ability rather than compare their growth to others. 4. Reflection: taking time to make connections and review our goals and performance is an important part of learning. 5. Reading: building reading skills, fluency, vocabulary and deeper comprehension is a major component to later success so we will focus a lot of our time on reading, making connections and applying those connections. 6. Self-grading; research shows that when children are active parts of the grading process their learning increases as does their self-advocacy. We will start slow and build capacity throughout the year. 7. Projects: expect one major project in each semester. I promise to give parents plenty of notice about these projects. |
